The Sauce That Starts the Season: Meet Backyard BBQ

🔥It Started with a Smoker (and a Lot of Smoke)
A little Backyard Brine story…
Randy has been a BBQ guy for a long time.
It all started back in 2004, when we were living on a horse ranch in Colorado and I bought him his first off-set wood smoker.
From that moment on… he was hooked.
He started smoking everything:
Meat.
Vegetables.
Even sea salt.
There was always a fire burning outside and our friends would joke that Randy was "Ash farming" LOL!
And those first meals?
Let’s just say they were… very smoky.
Like… so smoky we couldn’t even feed it to the animals on the farm. (Yes, really. 😂)
But like anything worth doing, it got better with time.
With practice, patience, and a lot of trial and error, Randy honed his craft, and now makes some pretty mean BBQ that would knock your socks off.
Our sauces are inspired by that journey.
By his love of BBQ.
By the different regional styles he’s obsessed with.
And by the belief that great flavor should feel like it belongs in a real backyard.

When Backyard Season Begins
There’s a moment every year when it finally happens.
The grill comes out.
Someone says, “Should we just throw something on?”
And suddenly… it’s not just dinner anymore.
It’s the start of backyard season.
The kind where evenings stretch longer.
Where paper plates feel like the right choice.
Where someone is always standing by the grill, talking about how they “just eyeball it.”
And if there’s one thing that brings it all together?
It’s the sauce.

Not All BBQ Sauce Is the Same
Some sauces sit on the side.
Some sauces get brushed on at the end.
And some sauces?
They’re part of the whole story.
That’s exactly what Backyard BBQ was made for.
Sweet. Smoky. Balanced.
The kind of sauce that works whether you’re grilling for two or feeding a full table.

What Makes Backyard BBQ Different
We wanted something that felt like it belonged in a real backyard.
Not too heavy.
Not too sweet.
Not trying too hard.
Just the right mix of:
  • sweetness
  • smokiness
  • depth of flavor
  • and that little something that makes people ask,
    “Wait… what is this?”
And just as important as what we add… is what we don’t.
Many BBQ sauces rely on high fructose corn syrup for sweetness.
We take a different approach...using simple, real ingredients to build flavor the way it’s meant to be.
No high fructose corn syrup. Ever.
It’s the kind of sauce you feel good about putting on the table.
And the kind you keep reaching for.

How We Use It (All Season Long)
This is not a “special occasion” sauce.
This is a “Tuesday night turned into something better” sauce.

🍗 1. Brush It on Grilled Chicken
Simple. Reliable. Always good.
Brush Backyard BBQ on chicken during the last few minutes on the grill and let it caramelize just enough.
Serve with a side of Dill Death Do Us Part to balance the richness.

🍔 2. Upgrade Your Burger Game
Instead of ketchup:
  • spread Backyard BBQ on the bun
  • add cheese
  • layer with Jalapeño Dill or We Go Together Like Bread & Butter
Sweet, smoky, tangy — done.

🌽 3. Drizzle It on Grilled Veggies
Corn. Zucchini. Peppers.
A light drizzle of Backyard BBQ adds just enough flavor to make vegetables feel like part of the main event.

🥪 4. Build a Backyard Sandwich
Pulled chicken, leftover steak, or even a veggie stack:
  • Backyard BBQ as the base
  • a swipe of Dill Dijon
  • a few pickle chips for that bright finish
Messy in the best way.

🔥 5. Pair It with Fire Pit Mop Sauce (Pro Move)
For the grill lovers:
Use Fire Pit Mop Sauce while cooking for that vinegar-forward flavor, then finish with Backyard BBQ for sweetness and depth.
It’s layering flavor the backyard way.

🥒 Relish the Facts
Did you know?
Great BBQ is all about balance.
Sweet, smoky sauces bring richness, and it’s acidity (like pickles or vinegar-based sauces) that keeps everything from feeling too heavy.
That’s why BBQ and pickles have always gone hand in hand.
It’s not just tradition.
It’s flavor doing its thing.

A Backyard Note
We don’t believe in perfect grilling.
We believe in:
  • a little char
  • a little mess
  • people gathering around
  • someone always going back for seconds
And a sauce that makes everything taste like it belongs there.

Your May Plan
If you do one thing this month:
✔️ Fire up the grill
✔️ Keep it simple
✔️ Add a great sauce
✔️ Don’t forget the pickles
That’s it.
Backyard season has officially started.
