From Garden to Jar: How Spring Inspired Backyard Brine
There’s something about March.
We turn the clocks forward... which, if you ask Cori, is the best day of the year!! More light. Longer evenings. That first golden hour that stretches just a little further into dinner.
We start planning the gardens.
Mapping out what we’ll plant.
Talking about tomatoes and herbs and cucumbers before they’ve even broken through the soil.
March feels like renewal.
Like clearing the table. Opening the windows. Letting fresh air in.
And for us, it always brings us back to where this whole thing started.
With cucumbers.
It Started in the Garden
Before there were labels.
Before there were cases stacked in a warehouse.
Before there was anything called “The Backyard Box.”
There were cucumbers growing in our garden.
Too many cucumbers.
The kind that make you start knocking on neighbors’ doors and saying, “Do you need any?”
So we did what people have done for generations when gardens overflow, we preserved them.
We pickled.
We tested recipes. Adjusted spice blends. Tasted. Tweaked. Shared jars with friends. Made more.
Those backyard cucumbers, grown with dirt under our fingernails and sun still warm on our shoulders, are what inspired Backyard Brine to be born.
And every spring, when we start planning the garden again, it feels like coming home.
Spring Is a Flavor Reset
This time of year isn’t just about planting.
It’s about refreshing.
Cleaning out the fridge.
Trying new combinations.
Thinking about snack boards on the patio.
Dreaming about the first cookout.
And that’s where the jars come in.
The Pickles That Started It All
Each flavor has its own place at the table and its own little backyard personality.
-
Dill Death Do Us Part — our version of the classic garlic dill. Bold, savory, timeless.
-
We Go Together Like Bread & Butter — sweet, nostalgic pickle chips that belong on every spring sandwich.
-
Sweet Heat — maple syrup and jalapeño bringing just enough kick to wake up your taste buds.
-
Everything Bread & Butters — sweet chips with everything bagel seasoning (brunch board, anyone?).
-
Jalapeño Dill — dill spears with garlic and jalapeño, made for grilling season.
The Condiments That Build the Backyard Table
If the pickles are the spark, the condiments are what turn a meal into a moment.
-
Backyard BBQ — sweet and smoky, perfect for ribs and burgers.
-
Backyard Blonde — mustard-based and made for pulled pork, hot dogs, and grilled chicken.
-
Fire Pit Mop Sauce — vinegar-forward and built for true backyard grillers.
-
Dill Dijon — briny mustard that makes sandwiches sing.
-
Dill Pickle Hot Sauce — because sometimes you want tang and a little heat.
These were created for long evenings, paper plates, and people reaching across the table for “just a little more.”
Relish the Facts
Did you know?
Cucumbers are over 90% water — which makes them the perfect canvas for flavor. When they meet vinegar, salt, herbs, and time, they transform into something entirely new.
That transformation — from garden fresh to jarred and shared — is what preserving has always been about.
Saving the season.
Stretching the harvest.
Making it last just a little longer.
Why March Feels Like the Beginning
Turning the clocks forward reminds us that brighter days are ahead.
Planning the garden reminds us that something new is always growing.
And every jar we make still carries a little bit of that first backyard harvest inside it.
If you’re refreshing your fridge this spring…
If you’re dreaming about snack boards and grill nights…
If you’re ready for longer evenings and fuller tables…
This is your season.
